**The gap between the birth of George in 1862 and Johnin 1866 was due to
the Civil War. John N. McKeel is listed as a private in Company H, 9th
tennessee Calvary. He was capture at Motley Ford, TN. on Dec. 4, 1863.
He was first sent to the military prison in Louisville, KY. and was
received on Dec. 21, 1863. After processing he was discharged on Dec.
21, 1863 to Rock Island, Ill. He arrived at the Rock Island POW
headquarters on Jan. 3, 1864. John spent the remainder of the war at Ro
Island until his release on May 24, 1865. At this time he was required
to sign an Oath of Loyalty. According to this oath he had a dark
complexion, black hair, gray eyes, was 5 ft. 10 1/2 inches tall and 31
